Rumen bypass fat
Feed additive for productive animals

Rumen bypass fats, also known as rumen-protected fats or protected fats, are dry fats that are processed to be easily mixed into animal feed.
It is named for its inert properties in the rumen, which allows it to bypass the rumen and be absorbed in the small intestine without significantly affecting the rumen ecosystem.
This makes bypass fat a good energy source that can help increase milk production, milk fat production, and body condition.
They are a vital ingredient in the diets of dairy cows because they are the most energy dense feed ingredients available, containing 2.25 times the energy of carbohydrates.
Bypass fat comprises fatty acids associated with Calcium ions, instead of a glycerol backbone. When calcium is associated with fatty acids, the fat supplement dissolves much slower in rumen fluid. Bypass fat has low solubility in the rumen and is less susceptible to bio-hydrogenation.
Feeding of “bypass” fat (protected fat) is done primarily to avoid ruminal hydrolysis of bio-hydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids and
ensures energy is digested and absorbed in the lower gut.
The rumen consists of the first of four stomach of a ruminant, which receives food from the omasum and passes it to the small intestine) at acidic pH, without interfering with the fermentative digestion in the rumen.

BENEFITS

  • Bypass fats are a highly concentrated source of energy, and feeding it to dairy cows can help increase milk production.

  • Bypass fat allows the fat to “bypass” the rumen to the small intestine where it can be absorbed and used by the cow, without significantly altering the rumen ecosystem.

  • This creates an excellent energy source which can help increase milk, milk fat production, and body condition

  • It also maintains a neutral effect on the rumen, unlike alternative energy supplements.

  • Improves Milk Quality & yield

  • Reduces feed costs
